Chess Coaching
We believe chess is, first and foremost, a social game. Studying alone can be useful, but for most kids, chess becomes exciting when they have friends to play, puzzles to solve together, games to talk about, and a community they look forward to seeing each week. Kids improve by playing a lot, and they play a lot when chess is fun. The foundation of our classes is structured learning inside an active chess community.
Our Approach
Our curriculum is built around the Chess Steps Method, a highly structured system that develops chess skills progressively through tactical patterns, calculation, strategy, and increasingly complex positions. But every student shouldn’t receive exactly the same instruction. We continuously review our students' games outside of class to identify recurring strengths and weaknesses. From there, they can receive personalized exercises and homework targeted specifically at the areas that will help them improve most. In class, students learn new concepts, solve problems, play structured games and mini-games, analyze positions, and most importantly, play plenty of chess.
How Our Classes Work
Children and adults often improve differently.
For younger students, our first priority is creating an environment where they want to keep playing. Experience matters enormously: every game gives a student another opportunity to recognize patterns, make decisions, learn from mistakes, and become more comfortable at the board.
As players become older and more experienced, improvement must be more deliberate. We begin identifying weaknesses in areas such as tactics, calculation, endgames, strategy, time management, and decision-making, then build training around those specific needs. For adults, identifying weaknesses from deep game analysis is non-negotiable for improving.
The goal is not simply to teach students more chess information. The goal is to help them become better at thinking for themselves at the board.
How We Think About Improvement
Roseville and the surrounding area already have excellent opportunities to play chess, including free clubs, casual meetups, and tournaments. We strongly encourage our students to use them!
Our classes are designed to provide something different: consistent, affordable coaching with personal attention.
School clubs are wonderful places to play, but instructors often cannot closely follow the development of every individual student. At the other extreme, private coaching with titled professional players can become expensive and may be more specialized than a newer player actually needs.
We aim to fill the space between those two options.
Students receive a real curriculum, regular coaching, ongoing game review, individualized training, and a community of players to grow alongside. As a student advances into higher levels of tournament chess, working with a titled specialist will become a valuable next step.
Our job is to give students the foundation, habits, and love of the game that can take them there.
